Not Your Father's Way of Doing Church

Love him or hate him, Mark Driscoll is making an impact for Christ and the world is taking notice. Check out this profile from ABC's Nightline last night: http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=6746393

If you are not familiar with Driscoll, you can order his autobiographical account of his unique ministry here.

His church's web site is at http://www.marshillchurch.org/ and you can download sermons and music from the several worship bands. My personal favorite is the now retired band Team Strike Force.

So what do you think? Can a church be theologically conservative and culturally liberal and still glorify God? Add you comments below.

Hey Massimo it's Rob Schutt...I think this guy is great. From what I can tell God is using his Ministry to meet needs of those who might not attend a traditional church. Its makes me think of the Reformers who's views also stirred up bad thoughts among the traditional churchgoers, yet paved way for for some of the greatest modern heros of faith. I am all for Mark and will pray for him and his family.

Never heard of the guy. I like him. Different preaching styles appeal to different people and after watching the video, I'm convinced that he's gathering in sheep that John MacArthur probably could not. As long as he's "keepin' it real, Man". Mostly, that he's remaining true to the Gospel. Also, you know the importance of follow-up and accountability. As far as "liberal culture", I think it comes down to "what must a believer change in his lifestyle and behavior in order to line up with scripture?" Tattoos and belly rings? Not so much. Immorality, excessive drinking, drugs, immodest dress? You bet. I guess it's a question of at what point do culture and scripture collide? Anyway, I really enjoyed the video and will be pondering it for some time! Thanks, Linda Johnson

To the extent that he is biblical and faithful to God, his ministry glorifies God...to the extent that he is unbiblical and worldly, to that extent God's name is dragged through the mud. What are those degrees? We all have our opinions, but God will ultimately decide those things at the judgment.

Hi Maximus,

to be fair I barely heard parts of Driscoll's speeches.
But what impressed me is a series of comments on this individual by John MacArthur and Phil Johnson (*)
I don't think they lie and the final opinion of this emerging church is quite negative.
Peace, Simon

I heard about the guy, mostly by John MacArthur and in a negative way. This is a mutant variation of the emerging church, impermeated of foul language and other trash.
Thanks God never had the chance to hear Mr Driscoll in action when using his loose tongue and not looking forward to it.
Peace

Alasehir, thanks for posting. As with Ed Stetzer, I would classify Driscoll in the conservative emergent church list. Theologically he is as conservative as one could be. Perhaps you should do some first-hand research before forming an opinion?
